We use Xero for our business and recommend it to clients who need an accounting system.
Xero is a modern online accounting system for small to medium-sized businesses. It's powerful yet simple to use and because it's web based you don't have to worry about installing software, upgrading it or backing it up - it's all done for you. All you need is a PC, Mac, tablet or smart phone and an internet connection. Best of all Xero is built for human beings - you don't have to be an accountant or computer whizz to use it.
We are a Gold Xero partner and provide tailored Xero training.
How Xero Works
Each day Xero automatically downloads a list of transactions from your bank and then the next time you log onto Xero it asks you to classify them (for example sales, office expense, entertainment).
Once you've classified your transactions (Xero calls it "reconciling"), your accounts are up to date and you can run a GST return in Xero with everything you need to fill in your return at IRD. You can also get up-to-date financial reports and at the end of the year most of what your accountant needs is waiting in Xero.
Xero also has all the other things you need from an accounting system: invoicing, payroll, inventory, multicurrency, fixed assets, contacts and full financial and management reporting. The invoicing function in Xero is particularly good. Because it loads your bank transaction history each day, reconciling your transactions shows at a glance which invoices are overdue.
How to get Xero
If you have an existing accounting system and are interested in switching to Xero have a look at our FAQ on how to make the move.
You can go to the Xero website and sign up for a free trial. If you like it, you start paying monthly.
Even better we can provide the standard and premium retail versions of Xero at a discount to our clients. If you operate in Australia, no problem, we do the Australian version of Xero too.
We also offer fixed price pay monthly accounting packages that include Xero.
Xero isn't hard to use but it is different to traditional desktop accounting systems. If you use it the "Xero way" it is blindingly efficient, if you use it as you would other accounting systems then you end up creating extra work for yourself.
When we set up Xero for someone the first thing we do is get the bank accounts hooked up and with the correct balance, then we bring the client in for one on one training where we cover the essentials of Xero tailored to their business. When we do this it is plain sailing from then on and we get very few Xero support calls.
We also offer this training to the public - you don't need to be one of our clients and if you can't get into our office, no problems - we can do the training over Skype.
If you are not GST registered and don't use invoicing then one hour should suffice - this will cost you $152 including GST. If you want to use invoicing and/or are GST registered then allow 1.5 hours - this will cost you $228 including GST. Contact us for more details or to book a training session.
